1. Common Cause of Disc Herniation

0 Disc Herniation

Major causes for disc herniation in the neck or lower back include major or minor trauma.

Minor traumas can cause disc herniation such as a repetitive environment causing wear and tear over time will weaken the outer wall of the disc and allow the fluid inside the disc to bulge or herniate towards the nerve causing nerve pressure.

Major traumas such as auto accidents, work accidents, sports accidents, accidents with exercise and things with that nature where you increase your spinal pressure that too can cause the weakening of the outer wall instantly and just makes it weak and the food inside the disc will bulge to herniate out and cause nerve pressure and cause pain in that way.

If you are suffering from a disc bulge give me a call, I’d love to help, my name is Dr. Neil Langschied and I’m a chiropractor in Jeffersontown Kentucky.

2. How Chiropractic Adjustments Relieve Disc Herniation

0 Disc Herniation

How do chiropractic adjustments help disc herniations? By keeping your spine lined up it helps take the pressure off of the disc and allows the disc to function correctly and allows the vertebrae above and below the disc to function and move correctly.

By doing that the pressure is decreased therefore the bulge in the herniation will reduce taking it away from the nerve and decreasing your pain. And that’s typically how the chiropractic adjustment will help you with disc herniations in bulges.

If I can help give me a call, my name is Dr. Neil Langschied and I’m a chiropractor in Jeffersontown Kentucky.

3. Disc Herniation Therapies

0 Disc Herniation

Therapies to relieve disc herniation will include ultrasound therapy to help decrease any kind of deep swelling within the joint itself.

We can also do massage therapy and muscle stimulation therapy to help decrease any kind of muscle spasms and scar tissue formation in the muscles that maybe resulting from the injury.

Typically will do a decompression of the lumbar spine which is vey similar to traction. Decompression therapy helps to open up the disc space, takes the pressure off and allows the fluid to move back up into the normal space of the disc therefore relieving the pressure off the nerve and relieving pain.

Those are some of the therapies we use treat disc herniation in our office. If we can help, give me a call, my name is Dr. Neil Langschied and I’m a chiropractor in Jeffersontown Kentucky.

4. How to Treat Disc Herniation

0 Disc Herniation

Can chiropractic help with the disc herniation? Definitely you see this a lot in our office. Typically what we do is we locate the disc herniation and we locate spinal misalignment. If you align the spine up better it allows for the disc to operate at a higher level and will function better.

We can also do things like traction which help open up the disc space and take the pressure off in the disc and allow the herniation or bulge to move back up into where it used to be and away from your nerve and spinal cord.

My name is Dr. Neil Langschied and I’m a chiropractor in Jeffersontown Kentucky.

5. Difference Between Disc Bulge and Disc Herniation

0 Disc Herniation

What’s the difference between a disc bulge and a disc herniation?  Disc bulge is where the fluid is still contained within the disc but is bulging and pressing out against the nerve.

Disc herniation is where the fluid substance inside the disc actually has broken through the outer barrier of the disc and is leaking out against the nerve and causing pain. And that’s the difference between the disc bulge and the disc herniation.

Our chiropractic office is located in Jeffersontown Kentucky.

6. When is Surgery Necessary for Disc Herniation

0 Disc Herniation

When is surgery necessary for disc herniations? Typically those are necessary when there’s significant neurological loss like loss of reflexes, loss of strength, loss of muscle mass through a leg or arm in the neck or the lower back.

Typically those are always surgical cases at that point. So that’s when we will refer someone else to have a surgical consultation for disc herniation surgery.

7. Can Disc Bulge Cause Leg Pain

0 Disc Herniation

Can a disc bulge cause leg pain? Yes. We its in the lower back, those nerves that come out of the lumbar spine go down the leg into the foot and if the bulge is big enough and if it hits the nerves it will definitely cause leg pain.

8. Can Heavy Lifting Cause Disc Bulge

0 Disc Herniation

Can heavy lifting cause a disc bulge? Yes, we see that quite often in our office. When you lift something heavy, especially if you lift something incorrectly out away from your body, it increases the spinal pressure in your back. When you do that you have the risk of herniating or bulging a disc in your lower back.

9. Can Overweight Cause Disc Herniation

0 Disc Herniation

Can being overweight cause you to have a disc herniation? Sure. When you carry a lot more weight it becomes more difficult to lift things up, to get up out of bed, just everything becomes more difficult.

Being overweight increases your spinal pressure and increases your ability to have a disc bulge or disc herniation. So definitely being overweight can increase your chances of having those kinds of problems.

10. How to Tell if Back Pain is from Disc Injury

0 Disc Herniation

How can you tell if a back injury is due to a disc problem? Typically with the disc you’re going to have some sort of radiating pain or it might only happen now if you are coughing, sneezing or going to the bathroom. So if you get disc pain only at those times, that is typically a disc problem.

11. Tips Help Disc Herniation at Home

0 Disc Herniation

How can you help with disc herniation at home? There are several ways, one is using ice to decrease the information using that three times a day for 10-15 minutes will help.

Body positioning, staying whatever is comfortable for you is usually the best position to be in. So if you’re sleeping at night, if you’re more comfortable on your side, sleep on your side. Make sure you put a pillow between your legs.

If you are more comfortable on your back, make sure you elevate and put cushioning behind your knees. And so those are some ways that you can help with disc herniations at home.

12. What is a Slipped Disc

0 Disc Herniation

What is a slipped disc? It’s a layman’s term. It can be anything from disc bulge to a disc herniation. Some doctor’s reference it using for a disc herniation or disc bulge.

A slipped disc doesn’t really occur it’s just a kind of layman’s term that is all in composing of a disc problem in itself. So that’s where that term comes from.

13. Will Disc Herniation Heal on it’s Own

0 Disc Herniation

Does a disc herniation heal on its own? Generally speaking, yes the disc herniation can heal on its own however it may heal wrong so that would be a problem later on down the road. This could leave you more susceptible to having a re-injury.

Typically with treatment you’ll reduce the scar tissue formation that allows it to heal more correctly and allow you to not have as many flare ups or reoccurrence to that injury.

So disc herniations can heal on their own but it’s better off if you have treatment.

14. Will Whirlpool Help Disc Herniation

0 Disc Herniation

Can a whirlpool help with your disc herniation? No. Typically it would not help for a disc herniation. A whirlpool or hot tub would increase the blood circulation to the area and therefore increase the inflammation pain.

So if you suspect you have a disc herniation or bulge I would stay out of the whirlpools and hot tubs.
