1. What is Sciatica
What is sciatica? The definition of sciatica is pain originating in the lower back rating all the way down into your foot.
Typically sciatica is one sided not both legs at the same time. Typically it’s just in one leg, but it has go from the lower back all the way into the foot to be truly diagnosed as sciatica.
2. Common Cause of Sciatica
What are the common causes of sciatica? Sciatica can be caused by three things.
- It could be caused by misalignment of the spine and pinching the nerve that comes out your spine and goes down the leg.
- Another way that nerve can get irritated is from the disc bulge or disc herniation in the back pinching and irritating the nerve that goes down to the foot.
- And third way the sciatic nerve can get irritated is by some of the musculature through the hip and lower back area. Those muscles get tight and stressed on that nerve then they irritate that nerve as well and you’ll get that radiating pain down the leg into the foot.
So those are three common causes of sciatica. I can help relive sciatic pain, my name is Dr. Neil Langschied and I’m a chiropractor in Jeffersontown Kentucky.

4. Therapies to Relieve Sciatica
Therapies that relieve sciatica, typically in our office we’ll do a number of things depending on what we find.
We can do muscle stimulation that help relieve the tension of muscles that maybe irritating the nerve.
We also do traction in case of disc herniation that helps relieve the pressure on the disc and take the pressure away from the nerve as well.
We can also use massage therapy to relieve the tension in the musculature that maybe pinching the nerve as well.
So those are some of the ways in our office that we help you with sciatica. If I can help give me a call, my name is Dr. Neil Langschied and I’m a chiropractor in Jeffersontown Kentucky.
5. Can Epidural Shot Help Sciatica
Can epidural steroid shots help you with sciatica? They can help relieve the pain; however it’s usually just temporary relief.
In addition the side effects of steroids actually impede the healing process. They will crystallize in the soft tissue structure that you are actually trying to heal. Long term use will generally lead to further breakdown of the disc and the soft tissue structure in the spine and will make it worse.
So if you need immediate relief, sometimes they do help however long term usage I would not recommend. So steroid shots don’t actually help you with the actual problem causing sciatica.
6. Can Sciatica Cause Leg Weakness
Can sciatica cause leg weakness? Yes, if you have sciatica for a long enough period time the nerve will start to deteriorate and therefore anything that it goes to can become weaker as well, including the muscles.
There are ways such as a nerve conduction test to help determine if the nerve is getting weaker and if you are getting muscle loss.
So those are some of the ways that we determine if sciatica is causing muscle weakness.
7. Can Sitting Cause Sciatica
Can sciatica be caused by sitting? Yes it can. Especially if you like to sit with your legs crossed which puts more pressure on one side of your body.
8. Can Stretching Relieve Sciatic Leg Pain
Can stretching help sciatica? In some cases it may. If you’re experiencing an increase in pain during or after the stretching you are better off to just leave it alone and not irritate it anymore. Because it could be stretching that nerve across a bulged disc just making it worst.
So if you are having increase in pain, do not stretch otherwise you’re probably okay.
9. Home Remedies for Sciatica
Home remedies for sciatica? We typically include icing for 10-50 minutes couple times a day, two to three times a day. Make sure you leave it off for a couple of hours in between.
