1. What is Scoliosis

What is scoliosis? Scoliosis is defined as curvature of the spine. There are ways to measure the curvature of the spine to determine if you have scoliosis from an x-ray.

You try to find scoliosis in kids during school examinations however sometimes you can’t see the scoliosis unless you have an x-ray.

2. Cause of Scoliosis

What is the cause of scoliosis? Most commonly scoliosis is classified as idiopathic. Idiopathic meaning cause is unknown.

There are genetic tendencies towards scoliosis so if you have scoliosis a lot times it might mean that your child has scoliosis as well.

Sometimes there are congenital anomalies or deformities of the spine that can cause scoliosis but those are pretty rare.

What are the seven signs of scoliosis and how do you check for them? Have your child stand in front of you with their arms down in their side. Nice and relax and with their eyes closed. Observe these findings:

  1. Head turned to one side more prominently
  2. Earlobes uneven
  3. One shoulder higher than other
  4. One shoulder blade higher
  5. One shoulder blade more prominent
  6. Ribs protruding
  7. Hip levels uneven

What are the complications of scoliosis? There are a lot of complications of scoliosis especially long term.

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Decreased lung capacity
  • Higher degree of long infections
  • Affect your digestive system
  • Can affect menstrual cycles

Can pregnancy cause scoliosis? Yes it can. When you are carrying that much extra weight in the abdomen and putting pressure on the lower back a lot of times what will happen is a gently shift in the spine to one side of the other over period of time.

After pregnancy if the spine doesn’t come back into normal alignment you can get scoliosis from pregnancy.
