1. Common Cause of Carpal Tunnel
What is the most common cause of carpal tunnel syndrome? The most common cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is overuse of your hands and wrists.
People nowadays have desk jobs where they are inputting information on the computer so they’re typing quite a bit and you get carpal tunnel with that because of all the usage of the fingers and the tendons on your hands and wrists.
Overuse or repetitive hand or finger movement is the most common cause of carpal tunnel syndrome.
2. Carpal Tunnel Symptoms
What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel? Typically the symptoms of carpal tunnel are:
- Hand pain
- Numbness or tingling in the hands and wrist
- Burning hand pain
- Weakness with gripping
3. How Chiropractic Adjustments Relieve Carpal Tunnel
How do chiropractic adjustments help carpal tunnel? Carpal tunnel is irritation of the nerve at the wrist and sometimes even a pinched nerve in the neck can create the carpal tunnel syndrome.
Our chiropractic therapy and treatments work on relieving the pressure off the nerve at both those areas and that’s how chiropractic adjustments will help you with your carpal tunnel syndrome.
4. Therapies to Relieve Carpal Tunnel
Therapies that will help with the carpal tunnel in our office is typically a combination of:
- Ultrasound is a therapy that will help decrease swelling in the tendon and decrease scar tissue formation in the wrist which will reduce the scar tissue.
- We can also do electrical muscle stimulation therapy on the muscles of the forearm to relieve muscle tension, pressure and inflammation of the nerves.
- We can also do massage therapy in the muscles of the forearm to help relieve the stress and tension in the muscle and into the tendon that goes down into the wrist that’s leading to your carpal tunnel syndrome.
That’s how we help with carpal tunnel therapies. If you are experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome, give our chiropractic office in Jeffersontown KY a call, my name is Dr. Neil Langschied.
5. When is Surgery Necessary for Carpal Tunnel
How do you know if you need surgery for your carpal tunnel? Typically with carpal tunnel if you’re getting some neurological deficit such as weakness of the hand or loosing your grip strength,
If the muscles of your hand are atrophying or the muscles size is getting smaller and smaller in the forearm and you can take measurements to determine that.
Whenever you making a determination whether you are going to have surgery we will do a nerve conduction test which actually shows how well your nerve is working. If your nerve is getting weaker and weaker, at that point, yes, you probably want to have surgery done to relieve the pressure on the nerve so the nerve doesn’t die.
6. Home Remedies for Carpal Tunnel
What are some home remedies for carpal tunnel? You can do ice 10-15 minutes a couple of times, two to three times a day to help decrease the inflammation in the wrist.
You can do some light massage on your forearm to help decrease the tension of the muscles that hold the tendons that go through the wrist.
In addition to that, it’s a good idea that if you have a home computer or working on a computer at work to have a wrist support.
